Blakey è uno dei più grandi batteristi della storia, ed uno dei cultori del bebop (in particolare dell'Hard Bop.)
La sua carriera inizia nel 1938 con la pianista Mary Lou Williams con la quale fonda i Fletcher Henderson nel 1940. Successivamente comincia lunghe collaborazioni con Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro e Sarah Vaughan. Durante una lunga visita in Africa occidentale, verso fine degli anni '40, Art si è converte all'Islam, guadagnandosi il nome islamico di Abdullah Ibn Buhaina.
Nel 50' fonda il primo gruppo Hard Bop della storia, i JazzMessenger, gruppo molto importante per molti giovani musicisti del 1950, 1960, e 1970, che continuerà la sua carriera sino agli anni ottanta.
