Inauguriamo così la sezione Noise.
Dal Giappone derivano due dei più grandi artisti noise di sempre: Merzbow (forse IL più grande) e Masonna.
Merzbow (Masami Akita) nasce nel '56 a Tokio. Inizia da giovane, con tape loops e percussioni di scuola Throbbing Gristle e Einsturzende Neubauten a creare il suo sound, la sua "non musica", che negli anni lo eleverà a vero e proprio maestro del genere. Incredibile la sua discografia, più di 300 dischi che si possono consultare qui. Difficile inquadrare "come suona". E' senza dubbio comunque da ascoltare.
Masonna invece è più recente, dato che inizaia a calcare le scene nell'87. Anche qui è difficile riuscire a spiegare a parole cosa uscirà dalle casse quando lo ascolterete.. un buon disco di partenza potrebbe essere Mademoiselle Anne Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Aureolé .. -

Biografia
Nato a Tokyo nel 1956.
In adolescenza appassionatosi di musica psichedelica, rock progressive e tardo free jazz che influenzarono la sua musica.
Il suo disco Aqua Necromancer , per esempio, contiene campionamenti di frasi di batteria rock progressive, mentre il disco Doors Open at 8 am contiene campionamenti di free jazz.
Frequentò l'Università di Tamagawa per studiare arte. E' lì che venne a conoscenza dei Merz di Kurt Schwitters, o de "l'arte che viene dai rifiuti", incluso il Merzbau di Schwitter, o anche chiamato "Merz Building". Questa è l'origine del nome Merzbow
La Musica
I suoi primi pezzi erano fatti con creative registrazioni in loop su cassetta di percussioni e oggetti metallici, che lo hanno fatto paragonare a Throbbing Gristle e Nurse With Wound (un'influenza riconosciuta).
I suoi primi metodi includono quello che lui chiamava "Material Action", che consisteva nell'amplificare piccoli suoni per poi distorcerli attraverso il microfono; in seguito fece diversi dischi di "SCUM" (Scissors for Cutting Merzbow/Society for Cutting Up Merzbow) nei quali tagliò e incollò tra loro precedenti dischi fino a far saltar fuori qualcosa di nuovo.
La sua tendenza a lavorare a periodi su temi diversi si rifa' alla sua educazione come artista visivo.
La sua musica è uscita su cassette grazie alla sua etichetta "Lowest Music & Arts", fondata nel 1979.
All'inizio degli anni '80, dopo aver incontrato l'artista d'avanguardia noise Maurizio Bianchi a Milano, fondò una seconda etichetta, la "ZSF Produkt".
Più tardi iniziò ad usare più strumenti elettronici e chitarre elettriche, ma la sua musica continuò a consistere nel concetto che la maggior parte delle persone ha del "rumore". Da qualche anno, Merzbow ha iniziato ad usare di più la tecnologia digitale nelle sue creazioni. In una performance di oggi è normale per lui riprodurre tutto con l'ausilio di due computer portatili. Anche se ciò lascia costernati alcuni dei suoi fans, il risultato finale rende più visibili le sue radici nella persona di un batterista di jazz improvvisato.
Nel 2000, l'etichetta "Extreme Records" rilasciò il Merzbox, un set da 50 CD, 20 dei quali mai rialsciati prima.
Il set include anche adesivi, cartoline, un poster, un medaglione, un libro, un Cd-Rom e una maglietta; le prime copie includevano un poster extra e un doppio album.
Nel 2002 uscì con Merzbeat, che fu visto come un allontanamento dal suo tipico stile astratto perchè conteneva pezzi con una ritmica.
Ciò fece nascere pareri contrastanti tra i fans, anche se alcuni dei vecchi album di Merzbow, compresi alcuni dischi del Merzbox, sono a loro volta concentrati sulla ritmica. C'è anche da dire che gli album rialsciati erano molti di più di quelli che Merzbow fece uscire nei precedenti 10-15 anni ed erano molto più vari dei primi dischi.
Merzbird del 2004 e Merzbuddha del 2005 furono tra quest'ultimi.
Sebbene i suoi dischi si possono ragruppare in temi (dischi basati sui sintetizzatori, uno di collage, uno basato su pezzi di dischi rock e jazz), le ultime fatiche di Merzbow contengono una dimensione politica, riferita al P.E.T.A. e ai suoni animali.
Un'esempio di ciò sono gli album Minazo Vol 1 e Minazo Vol. 2, dedicati ad un elefante marino che andò a trovare spesso allo zoo, e Bloody Sea, una protesta contro la caccia alle balene in Giappone. Ha anche prodotto diversi lavori incentrati attorno la registrazione dei versi animali dei suoi polli domestici (Animal Magnetism e Turmeric)
Collaborazioni:
Merzbow cominciò a duettare con Kiyoshi Mizutani (che divenne un acclamato compositore da solo). Tra le prime collaborazioni ci sono artisti giapponesi come Reiko A., S-Core, Agencement, K. Kishino aka KK Null of the Bands YBO2, ANP e Zeni Geva. Per le registrazioni in studio, Merzbow continuò a da solo, ma spesso tra i tardi anni '80 e i '90, Merzbow dal vivo fu un trio che incluse Reiko A. per l'elettronica e Bara per cantare e ballare.
Attualmente suona da solo.

Ha scritto libri e articoli principalmente su argomenti che solitamente sono etichettati come "subcultura" o "deviante": Musica Noise, per esempio, o Bondage Giapponese (Qualcosa c'è anche nei suoi album Music for Bondage Performance). Il suo libro Noise War è considerato un dettagliato e rispettabile sommario del movimento noise negli anni '80, anche se non è disponibile in Inglese

la noise giapponese è probabilmente la migliore sotto vari punti di vista...io ascolto diversi progetti musicali noise di questa terra: merzbow, hijokaidan, hanatarash, masonna,the gerogerigegege, violent onsen geisha, riojy ikeda, aube, kk null....ma merzbow rimane comunque il dio incontrastato della noise! .
